Disaster History at Lake Royale

Hurricane Fran, September 6, 1996 - The destruction caused by Fran led to the implementation of the first emergency plan at Lake Royale. A lot of lessons were learned by the membership, the greatest of which was the way that response to the needs of the community brought everyone together.

Hurricane Floyd, September 16, 1999 - After three relatively quiet years, Lake Royale was once Again visited by a hurricane. Floyd didn't cause the wind damage that Fran did, but the flood waters brought on by the torrential rains washed out the bridge at the north end of the lake and washed over the road below the spillway. For several days, property owners on the east side of the lake had to find their ways through back roads in Franklin County. Fortunately for the POA, an emergency fund had been initiated after Fran. Money from this fund was used to rebuild the bridge. Great emphasis was placed on replenishing that fund and adding to it. It now stands at a $200,000 level.

Ice Storm, December 12, 2002 - An early winter ice storm brought home that Lake Royale could be impacted by more than hurricanes. After four days of clearing trees from the roadways and no electrical power, Lake Royale came back to life. It was soon after this event that the CERT program was started at Lake Royale, one of the first in the state.
