CERT Practices Search and Rescue
May 5, 2007

The Lake Royale CERT volunteers took part in a search and rescue practice. The scenario for the day was a tornado that had touched down in three sections on the northern end of the community. After answering some questions on the initial response, the group headed out to do some search and rescue.

Two mannequins (our CPR practice dummies) were placed in Section 12. Members of the group reported to that section, organized into search parties, and searched for the victims. Victim #1 was found unconscious and with a deep cut in his right leg just above the knee. Rescuers had to assess the injuries and detail how they would treat the victim. This treatment included CPR.

Victim two was trapped under a tree with an apparent broken leg. With the tree threatening to crush the victim, the group had to make decisions on proper plans of action.

After the exercise, the group debriefed to determine what areas they needed to work on. While we hope to never need to use these skills, we will be prepared should the need ever arise.
